How to Spot Fake Gold Jewellery: 7 Reliable Tests
By NorwegianSpark Editorial | Last updated: March 10, 2026
The magnet test
Real gold is not magnetic. A strong neodymium magnet will reveal most plated or filled fakes immediately. Not foolproof — some fakes use non-magnetic base metals — but it eliminates the worst offenders in seconds.
The acid test
Acid testing kits cost under NOK 200 and verify karat reliably. Apply a drop on an inconspicuous spot — real gold barely reacts, plated pieces show colour change.
The density test
Gold is unusually dense (19.3 g/cm³). Weigh the piece, submerge it in water to measure volume displacement, calculate density. Useful for unmarked bars or coins.
The professional XRF test
For pieces over NOK 5,000 in suspected value, pay for XRF testing at a jeweller. Non-destructive, accurate to fractions of a karat. Cost: NOK 200-500 per piece.
Buying authentic in the first place
The surest defence against fakes is to buy certified bullion from an established dealer rather than chasing bargains from unknown sellers. Silver Gold Bull and Gold Avenue (MKS PAMP) supply LBMA-certified coins and bars with verifiable assay documentation, which removes most authentication risk before it starts. Precious-metals prices are volatile and capital is at risk when you hold or trade gold; nothing here is financial advice.
